Experiencing
the Love of the
Father Who
Delights in You

with Rev. Clément Tendo

Tahoe
Family
Retreat

Welcome

My dear Revive Family,

Living in the Bay Area can cause us to regularly feel overwhelmed and burdened by the pressures of this world. I'm so thankful that you have chosen to take these days to get away and "retreat" from the usual busy-ness, fears, and worries that typically fill up your days. May this retreat help you to be filled up with the Holy Spirit and find your strength, courage, joy, and peace once again in our Lord. Let the theme of "Experiencing the Love of the Father Who Delights in You" remind you that our hope is not in changing circumstances but in our unchanging, everlasting God.

Our guest speaker Rev. Clément Tendo has blessed our Revive community many times before with his wisdom and insights into God's Word. May the Lord use him in a powerful way this 4th of July weekend to encourage and equip you, and I ask you, Revive, to be a blessing to him and his family as well as to Eric and Marigrey, the faithful servants whom the Lord has continued to provide to us to lead and teach our beloved children from Awana.

With much love,

Guest Speaker: Rev. Clément Tendo

Clément Tendo is originally from Goma, in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). In God’s providence, Clément got to hear God’s Word proclaimed at home and at church as a child. As the Lord continued to work in His life, he came to the realization that he was saved from his sin and that he is sustained by God’s sovereign grace and work (Eph. 2:1-10; Philippians 2:12-13). He attended African Bible University (ABU) in Uganda for his BA in Biblical Studies with Education. While at ABU, Clément came to know what he believes and why he believes it, and after ABU, he enrolled at Westminster in Philadelphia, PA, where he completed his MDiv. and is currently working on his Doctor of Ministry dissertation, focusing on gospel-centered peacemaking in communities torn by conflict. Recently ordained, Clément served as Associate Pastor at One Voice Fellowship until the end of 2025. Clément is married to Tracy, with whom they have been on an amazing journey of trusting the Lord and growing in His steadfast love together as a couple. Clément enjoys reading, watching movies, singing and playing guitar, sharing quality time and meals, long walks, and playing pickleball (a recent hobby) with his wife, relatives, and friends.

Session 1:
Celebrate and Do Not Fear, for Your Loving Father Delights You

Zephaniah 3:14-20 (ESV)

Israel’s Joy and Restoration

    [14] Sing aloud, O daughter of Zion;
        shout, O Israel!
    Rejoice and exult with all your heart,
        O daughter of Jerusalem!
    [15] The LORD has taken away the judgments against you;
        he has cleared away your enemies.
    The King of Israel, the LORD, is in your midst;
        you shall never again fear evil.
    [16] On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem:
    “Fear not, O Zion;
        let not your hands grow weak.
    [17] The LORD your God is in your midst,
        a mighty one who will save;
    he will rejoice over you with gladness;
        he will quiet you by his love;
    he will exult over you with loud singing.
    [18] I will gather those of you who mourn for the festival,
        so that you will no longer suffer reproach.
    [19] Behold, at that time I will deal
        with all your oppressors.
    And I will save the lame
        and gather the outcast,
    and I will change their shame into praise
        and renown in all the earth.
    [20] At that time I will bring you in,
        at the time when I gather you together;
    for I will make you renowned and praised
        among all the peoples of the earth,
    when I restore your fortunes
        before your eyes,” says the LORD.

Discussion Questions:

  • Talk about a time in which you have experienced betrayal in the context of a friendship.

  • How does David’s voice reflect what you felt?

  • How does God including it in the canon of Scripture encourage you? Confuse you?

  • How can David’s hope be ours?

  • How is our hope greater (or more robust and tangible) than David’s hope?

Session 2:
The Seeking Father

Luke 15:1–10 (ESV)

The Parable of the Lost Sheep

[1] Now the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to hear him. [2] And the Pharisees and the scribes grumbled, saying, “This man receives sinners and eats with them.”

[3] So he told them this parable: [4] “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it? [5] And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. [6] And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.’ [7] Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.

The Parable of the Lost Coin

[8] “Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and seek diligently until she finds it? [9] And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.’ [10] Just so, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

Discussion Questions:

  • What makes you particularly anxious about God’s provision for your needs?

  • Can you share about seasons where you have dealt well with this anxiety?

  • When you’ve delt well with your anxiety over God’s provision, how has God’s Word been particularly helpful?

  • In what ways can NOT being anxious about God’s provision bear witness to his glory to our neighbors and family members?

Session 3:
The Welcoming Father

Luke 15:11–24 (ESV)

The Parable of the Prodigal Son

[11] And he said, “There was a man who had two sons. [12] And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of property that is coming to me.’ And he divided his property between them. [13] Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in reckless living. [14] And when he had spent everything, a severe famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need. [15] So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs. [16] And he was longing to be fed with the pods that the pigs ate, and no one gave him anything.

[17] “But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have more than enough bread, but I perish here with hunger! [18] I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. [19] I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me as one of your hired servants.”’ [20] And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. [21] And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ [22] But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. [23] And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate. [24] For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.’ And they began to celebrate.

Discussion Questions:

  • Do you have “go to” verses of Scripture that you have committed to memory (in part or in whole) that you can “retrieve” when tragedy strikes?

  • How do you meditate on the Scriptures and think about/process the tragedy that is helpful to you?

  • How have you incorporated community into your grief? Discuss

  • What can you do to prepare yourself for the inevitability of grief?

Session 4:
The Entreating Father

Luke 15:25–32 (ESV)

[25] “Now his older son was in the field, and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. [26] And he called one of the servants and asked what these things meant. [27] And he said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf, because he has received him back safe and sound.’ [28] But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him, [29] but he answered his father, ‘Look, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command, yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might celebrate with my friends. [30] But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your property with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him!’ [31] And he said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. [32] It was fitting to celebrate and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.’”

Discussion Questions:

  • How would you explain the mission of God to a neighbor/friend who is genuinely curious?

  • Share some of the impediments to your faithfulness in mission.

  • How does God’s white hot, steadfast commitment to his mission encourage you in his mission?

  • How do you “keep hope alive” as you struggle in his mission for you and Revive?

Session 5:
Y
ahweh Blesses You in His Gracious Presence by Shining His Face on You

Numbers 6:22–27 (ESV)

Aaron’s Blessing

[22] The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, [23] “Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, Thus you shall bless the people of Israel: you shall say to them,

    [24] The LORD bless you and keep you;
    [25] the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you;
    [26] the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.

    [27] “So shall they put my name upon the people of Israel, and I will bless them.”

Discussion Questions:

  • How practically helpful is it for you to know that union with Christ means union with His body?

  • What would it look like for you to take the communal aspect of your faith more seriously?

  • Aspirationally, dream about what is possible if we lived in the reality of our union with one another.

  • How might you more robustly love the Bride of Christ?
