Perseverance with Joy

with Rev. Rod Miles

Tahoe Family Retreat

2025

Welcome

My dear Revive Family,

Living in the Bay Area can cause us to regularly feel overwhelmed and burdened by the pressures of this world. I'm so thankful that you have chosen to take these days to get away and "retreat" from the usual busy-ness, fears, and worries that typically fill up your days. May this retreat help you to be filled up with the Holy Spirit and find your strength, courage, joy, and peace once again in our Lord. Let the theme of "Persevering with Joy" remind you that our hope is not in changing circumstances but in our unchanging, everlasting God.

Our guest speaker Rev. Rod Miles has blessed our Revive community many times before with his wisdom and insights into God's Word. May the Lord use him in a powerful way this 4th of July weekend to encourage and equip you, and I ask you, Revive, to be a blessing to him and his family as well as to Eric and Marigrey, the faithful servants whom the Lord has continued to provide to us to lead and teach our beloved children from Awana.

With much love,

Session 1:
Persevering through Disappointment & Betrayal

Psalm 55 (NIV)

For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A maskil of David.

1 Listen to my prayer, O God,

do not ignore my plea;

2 hear me and answer me.

My thoughts trouble me and I am distraught

3 because of what my enemy is saying,

because of the threats of the wicked;

for they bring down suffering on me

and assail me in their anger.

4 My heart is in anguish within me;

the terrors of death have fallen on me.

5 Fear and trembling have beset me;

horror has overwhelmed me.

6 I said, “Oh, that I had the wings of a dove!

I would fly away and be at rest.

7 I would flee far away

and stay in the desert;

8 I would hurry to my place of shelter,

far from the tempest and storm.”

9 Lord, confuse the wicked, confound their words,

for I see violence and strife in the city.

10 Day and night they prowl about on its walls;

malice and abuse are within it.

11 Destructive forces are at work in the city;

threats and lies never leave its streets.

12 If an enemy were insulting me,

I could endure it;

if a foe were rising against me,

I could hide.

13 But it is you, a man like myself,

my companion, my close friend,

14 with whom I once enjoyed sweet fellowship

at the house of God,

as we walked about

among the worshipers.

15 Let death take my enemies by surprise;

let them go down alive to the realm of the dead,

for evil finds lodging among them.

16 As for me, I call to God,

and the Lord saves me.

17 Evening, morning and noon

I cry out in distress,
and he hears my voice.

18 He rescues me unharmed

from the battle waged against me,
even though many oppose me.

19 God, who is enthroned from of old,

who does not change—

he will hear them and humble them,

because they have no fear of God.

20 My companion attacks his friends;

he violates his covenant.

21 His talk is smooth as butter,

yet war is in his heart;

his words are more soothing than oil,

yet they are drawn swords.

22 Cast your cares on the Lord

and he will sustain you;

he will never let

the righteous be shaken.

23 But you, God, will bring down the wicked

into the pit of decay;

the bloodthirsty and deceitful

will not live out half their days.

But as for me, I trust in you.

Discussion Questions:

  • Talk about a time in which you have experienced betrayal in the context of a friendship.

  • How does David’s voice reflect what you felt?

  • How does God including it in the canon of Scripture encourage you? Confuse you?

  • How can David’s hope be ours?

  • How is our hope greater (or more robust and tangible) than David’s hope?

Session 2:

Persevering Through Anxiety Related to God’s Provision

Matthew 6:25-34 (NIV)

Do Not Worry

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Discussion Questions:

  • What makes you particularly anxious about God’s provision for your needs?

  • Can you share about seasons where you have dealt well with this anxiety?

  • When you’ve delt well with your anxiety over God’s provision, how has God’s Word been particularly helpful?

  • In what ways can NOT being anxious about God’s provision bear witness to his glory to our neighbors and family members?

Session 3:

Persevering When Tragedy Strikes

Psalm 23 (NIV)

A psalm of David.

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.

He makes me lie down in green pastures,

he leads me beside quiet waters,

3 he refreshes my soul.

He guides me along the right paths

for his name’s sake.

4 Even though I walk

through the darkest valley,

I will fear no evil,

for you are with me;

your rod and your staff,

they comfort me.

5 You prepare a table before me

in the presence of my enemies.

You anoint my head with oil;

my cup overflows.

6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me

all the days of my life,

and I will dwell in the house of the Lord

forever.

Discussion Questions:

  • Do you have “go to” verses of Scripture that you have committed to memory (in part or in whole) that you can “retrieve” when tragedy strikes?

  • How do you meditate on the Scriptures and think about/process the tragedy that is helpful to you?

  • How have you incorporated community into your grief? Discuss

  • What can you do to prepare yourself for the inevitability of grief?

Session 4:

Perseverance in Mission

Psalm 67 (NIV)

For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A psalm. A song.

1 May God be gracious to us and bless us

and make his face shine on us—

2 so that your ways may be known on earth,

your salvation among all nations.

3 May the peoples praise you, God;

may all the peoples praise you.

4 May the nations be glad and sing for joy,

for you rule the peoples with equity

and guide the nations of the earth.

5 May the peoples praise you, God;

may all the peoples praise you.

6 The land yields its harvest;

God, our God, blesses us.

7 May God bless us still,

so that all the ends of the earth will fear him.

Discussion Questions:

  • How would you explain the mission of God to a neighbor/friend who is genuinely curious?

  • Share some of the impediments to your faithfulness in mission.

  • How does God’s white hot, steadfast commitment to his mission encourage you in his mission?

  • How do you “keep hope alive” as you struggle in his mission for you and Revive?

Session 5:

Persevering as the Body and Bride of Christ

Ephesians 1:22-23 & 2:11-22

22 And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.

Jew and Gentile Reconciled Through Christ

11 Therefore, remember that formerly you who are Gentiles by birth and called “uncircumcised” by those who call themselves “the circumcision” (which is done in the body by human hands)— 12 remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ.

14 For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, 15 by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, 16 and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility. 17 He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. 18 For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.

19 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. 21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. 22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.

Discussion Questions:

  • How practically helpful is it for you to know that union with Christ means union with His body?

  • What would it look like for you to take the communal aspect of your faith more seriously?

  • Aspirationally, dream about what is possible if we lived in the reality of our union with one another.

  • How might you more robustly love the Bride of Christ?
